Filmmaking, Creative Strategy & Cultural Education for Change-Makers
I’m Najaa Young—a filmmaker, educator, and creative strategist committed to storytelling that is culturally grounded, emotionally resonant, and socially impactful. As founder of Orunmila’s Daughter, LLC, I help individuals, organizations, and communities shape stories that reflect truth, transformation, and purpose—through film, education, and creative consulting.
My journey began with a BA in Theatre Arts from Chatham University, followed by an MFA in Film Production from Florida State University. Since then, I’ve written, directed, and produced numerous short films, commercials, and music videos, in addition to feature-length projects and documentaries. My short film Stranger (2025) continues a legacy of independent storytelling that includes Blood First, Coochie, and American Africans. My work has screened at festivals and institutions like Yale University, the Pan African Film Festival, and the Black Harvest Film Festival.
As an editor and collaborator, I’ve also had the honor of editing two books by author Greer Goff Mendy: Black Dance in Louisiana: Guardians of a Culture and Naked Appearances: An Affinity to My Culture, helping preserve and elevate the cultural legacy of Black dance and identity.
Beyond the screen, I have worked extensively as a multidisciplinary artist and arts educator in Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Atlanta—leading with a commitment to culturally responsive teaching and creative empowerment. I’ve served in academic roles at Atlanta Metropolitan State College, Atlanta Technical College, and American Intercontinental University, where I taught screenwriting, film production, motion graphics, and cinema history while mentoring emerging artists and filmmakers.
One of the most formative experiences of my career was serving as Theatre Arts Program Manager at Karamu House—the oldest African American theater in the United States—where I helped nurture the next generation of storytellers in a space rich with legacy and community power.
Through Orunmila’s Daughter, I provide a range of services including creative consulting, story development, speechwriting, editing, digital content production, and strategic storytelling for schools, nonprofits, civic groups, and creatives. My work is rooted in the belief that stories can heal, ignite, and transform—and I’m here to help others bring those stories to life.
Whether I’m leading a workshop, producing a film, designing a curriculum, or collaborating with a client, I bring a commitment to clarity, excellence, and cultural integrity.
Let’s tell better stories—together.
I wrote, directed and co-produced Blood First as part of a joint venture with NaRa Films & OY Spotlite Entertainment. It was shot on location in Pittsburgh, PA and stars The Bear's Edwin Lee Gibson as Raqmaan. Watch the film in its entirety on Tubi and Amazon.
O and Rico, brothers bound by the blood of their hustler father, Raqmaan, share an unbreakable bond forged in the streets. But when a trusted associate becomes an FBI informant, accusing them of betrayal, the brothers must choose between honoring the unforgiving code of the streets or risking everything to save themselves.
Penumbra Films and Najaa Young present, Stranger. As Marcus casually enjoys a smoke in the woods he encounters a mysterious stranger that can do the impossible... or can he? Now Marcus must decide if he is losing his mind or has he made the greatest discovery of mankind.
Coming soon to a film festival near you!
My thesis film in its entirety made in 2004 at Florida State University.
Sky, a curious young woman, begins to unravel the truth behind the gay and lesbian figures portrayed on TV, believing that society is becoming more open and tolerant. But when she meets Te, a passionate woman who challenges everything Sky thought she knew, Sky must choose between her growing love for Te and a community that won't accept her newfound identity.
Tell us a little bit about your project. We will get back to you as soon as you can with some ideas of how we can make your story shine.
